Why focus on oral language skills and why NELI Preschool?
Oral language forms the foundation for learning and plays a vital role in learning to read, the development of early numeracy skills, and supporting children’s social and emotional development.
Language difficulties in early childhood often go undetected. Without timely intervention, these challenges are often persistent, impacting academic achievement, future employment opportunities, and social and emotional wellbeing. However, early identification and intervention can make a significant difference in helping children overcome language difficulties and reach their full potential.
The NELI Preschool programme was developed by a team led by Professors Charles Hulme and Maggie Snowling at the University of Oxford. The 20-week programme supports communication and language development through shared book reading, enrichment activities and child-led learning within optional continuous provision.
