# What does the training involve? Who needs to be trained?

NELI provides an online training and support model that gives school staff flexible, self-paced access to comprehensive training — and ongoing support — throughout the programme. Staff who are nominated to deliver the 20-week programme will access online training via the platform FutureLearn.

Staff who deliver the programme to pupils — usually Teaching Assistants (TAs) — must complete three linked online courses: two before they begin delivering NELI and one shorter course at the halfway point. The full core training takes 10–12 hours to complete. It is entirely self-paced — there are no live sessions — so staff can fit it around their school timetable.

Class teachers are required to complete one of the three linked training courses, which takes approximately 4–5 hours. It covers the fundamentals of understanding and supporting language development, plus an overview of the NELI programme.

If the NELI lead is not completing training in the class teacher role, they may optionally undertake the class teacher course to deepen their understanding of the NELI programme.
