An online training and support model has been developed to enable school staff to access comprehensive training to deliver NELI at times and at a pace that suits them, as well as being able to receive ongoing support throughout the programme. Staff who are nominated to deliver the 20-week programme will access online training via the platform FutureLearn.
The core training content, which staff delivering the programme to pupils (usually TAs), will need to undertake involves three linked online courses (two courses before you begin to deliver NELI and a further short course halfway through). It will take 10 – 12 hours to complete and can be undertaken in a self-paced manner, in other words, there are no live elements to the training and it can fit around you and your school.
Class teachers are required to complete one of the three linked training courses. This would be around 4-5 hours of training covering the fundamental aspects of understanding and supporting language development, as well as an overview of the programme.
If the NELI lead is not already accessing training as a class teacher, they can opt to undertake the training if they wish to better understand the programme.
More information on the NELI online training programme and content can be found on the NELI Online Training pages.
