The most recent evaluation of the NELI programme involved one teaching assistant delivering the programme to 5 children and we suggest that one NELI group could include between 3-6 pupils.
We understand that many children may be highlighted during screening as in need of targeted support for language. We encourage school staff to make their own professional judgments about how many pupils they would like to receive support through NELI. It may be useful to consult the EEF’s Teaching and Learning Toolkit ‘Small Group Tuition’ page to inform your decision on group size.
If you would like more than 6 children to receive NELI, we would recommend considering training more staff to implement the programme and running more NELI groups. Alternatively, you could ensure the trained adult has the capacity to support more than one group of children at a time. One NELI group of 5 pupils requires 4 hours of staff session time a week for 20 weeks, with some additional time required for preparation and record-keeping too.
