NELI would certainly benefit these children and, in terms of content, the programme has been designed to run alongside what schools already do. However, we must leave it to your judgment as to whether the time commitment of receiving both types of support is manageable for the children as well as staff. Consider both what the children are set to gain for taking part in the interventions as well as what they may miss from whole-class activities. If you find that NELI supports the same areas of language as an existing school-initiated intervention, you may decide to replace it but again, this is up to you and would depend on the programme and the children’s needs. We would not recommend that NELI replaces activities/interventions a speech and language therapist has put in place.
