The number of staff involved in NELI varies depending on the size of your school’s cohort of 4-5 year old children, the number of children you would like to receive NELI and the number of NELI groups your staff have capacity to accommodate.
One NELI group of 3-6 pupils requires one member of staff (usually a TA) to deliver the programme to pupils. Sessions happen away from whole class teaching and take up around 4 hours of that staff member’s time per week. Training is provided to this member of staff so they are confident to deliver the programme. Schools typically train one member of staff to deliver the programme for every group of NELI pupils.
Class teachers are also required to undertake some aspects of the training. This ensures they are fully aware of what the programme entails and can support the member of staff delivering NELI.
It is necessary to also nominate one colleague to be a NELI lead. They will be the main point of contact about NELI for the school and is usually someone who will be responsible for supporting with implementing and monitoring the delivery of NELI. This could be, for example, your early years lead, inclusion lead, SENDCo, or an assistant/deputy head. Their role will involve nominating the staff who will access the online training, completing surveys that monitor delivery of the sessions to pupils and they can take part in training if they wish. The NELI lead may also be a class teacher who is required to access the training anyway.
