We certainly understand why you might want to deliver the most possible support to the children in a limited time. However, the NELI programme was written with the 20-week structure, pace and timings which are laid out in the training and handbooks. The research into its effectiveness is based on this design, so altering the way NELI is delivered may make it less effective. A key element is the pace – the children in the NELI groups often find the speed of delivery too fast in a normal classroom, and (for example) they require lots of additional opportunities for overlearning. If you accelerate the pace, you are reducing these opportunities. Our advice is that it would be better to run the NELI programme as originally structured, for as many weeks as you can, without trying to accelerate it.
