A child selected for targeted intervention has been absent; should they join the next Small Group session? How do I help them catch up?

If a child misses some sessions, we recommend the following strategies to help them catch up:

  • Spend a few minutes reading the missed book with the child individually when they return. Review the Special Words introduced in the session to reinforce their understanding.
  • Share the home learning links with parents so they can continue supporting their child at home. You might also consider sending the missed book home so the child can read it with their parents and revisit the Special Words together.
  • Use creative strategies to enrich language and reinforce Special Words outside of formal sessions:
    • Intentionally use (“drop”) Special Words during everyday interactions.
    • Display the Special Word Flashcards around your setting
    • Incorporate themes or vocabulary from the book into your continuous provision activities.

These approaches help immerse children with lower attendance in a language-rich environment without requiring significant extra planning.
